King Lear
1. Lear, King of Britain, had three daughters; Goneril, wife to the duke of Albany;Regan, wife to the duke of Cornwall; and Cordelia, a young maid, for whose love the king of France and duke of  suitors, and were at this time making stay for that parpose in the court of Lear.
2. The old king, worn out with age and the fatigues of government, he being more than fourscore years old, determined to take no further part in state affairs, but to leave the management to younger strengths, that he might have time t prepare for death, which must at no long period ensue. With this intent he called his three daughters to him, to know from their own lips which of them loved him best, that he might part his kingdom among them in such proportions as thief affection for him should seem to deserve.
3. Goneril, the eldest, declared that she loved her father more than words could give out, that he was dearer to her than the light of her own eyeys, dearer than life and liberty, with a deal of such professing staff, which is easy to counterfeit where there is no real love, only a few fine words delivered with confidence being wanted in that case, The king, delighted to hear from her own mouth this assurance of her love, and thinking truly that her heart went with it. in a fit of fatherly fondnessbestowed upon her and her husband one third of his ample kingdom.

2． 老国王已经80多岁了，岁月不饶人，且久为政务所累，已日见衰弱，他决定不再参与国事，把种种移交年轻力壮的人，这样就可以颐养天年，来日看来也不多了。为此他把3个女儿召来，想听她们亲口说说，看谁爱得最深，而他就可以依据她们爱他的程度，来分配给她们应得的一部分王国。
长女高里纳尔表示，她对父亲的爱不是语言所能形容的，父亲对于她来说，比她自己眼睛的光明更为宝贵，比生命和自由更为宝贵。她还说了一大堆诸如此类的虚假废话——在那种不要求真爱，只需以信誓旦旦神色讲一些动听言词的场合，这类废话是毫不费力便可编的。国王听了她爱他的亲口保证，大为高兴，心想她是心口一致的，出于强烈的你爱，他把广大的王国的三分之一给了她和她的丈夫。
